Salmon Oil for Dogs
Salmon oil is one of the raw materials you increasingly find on the ingredients lists of high-quality dog food recipes, and not without reason. For your dog, it holds a natural source of valuable fatty acids that is used purposefully in recipes. We explain what salmon oil is, why it can be interesting for dogs and how NANDOO uses it in its recipes.
What is salmon oil?
Salmon oil is obtained from the fat of salmon and then gently processed so that the fatty acids it contains are preserved. It is one of the natural omega-3 sources and is used purposefully in recipes where a specific fatty acid profile is desired.
The long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA it contains are particularly valuable. In this form, they occur mainly in fish oils and can only be replaced to a limited extent by plant-based oils. That is why salmon oil is popular in canine nutrition as a targeted addition, rather than simply as a general fat source.
Unlike plant-based oils, salmon oil already provides the fatty acids EPA and DHA in a form your dog's body can absorb directly, without having to convert them first. This makes fish oils like salmon oil a particularly efficient fatty acid source in many recipes.
Why salmon oil for dogs?
Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon oil can have a positive effect on your dog's skin and coat, as they are a component of cell membranes and can contribute to a smooth, glossy coat. Salmon oil is also relevant for the overall fatty acid profile of a recipe, because it can shift the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 in a more balanced direction.
It is important to us to give an honest assessment: salmon oil is a natural raw material that can support certain processes in your dog's body. It is not a medicine and does not replace veterinary treatment for existing skin or coat problems.
