Carrot in Dog Food
Carrots, also called carrots, you probably know from your own kitchen, and in canine nutrition too they have established themselves as a popular ingredient. For your dog, this unassuming orange root holds more than you might expect at first glance. We explain what makes carrot a raw material, why it is interesting for dogs and how NANDOO uses it in recipes.
What is carrot?
The carrot, botanically Daucus carota, is a root vegetable grown worldwide and one of the best-known vegetables overall. For dog food it is usually processed grated or pureed, so that it can be worked into the recipe well and stays easy for your dog to digest.
The carrot owes its strong orange colour to the plant compound beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. Besides that, it provides fibre and a natural, mild sweetness that many dogs happily accept. As a vegetable component it complements animal ingredients in the recipe in an unobtrusive, well-tolerated way.
Why carrot for dogs?
Beta-carotene is converted in your dog's body into vitamin A as needed, a substance important for eyesight, cell growth and a functioning immune system. The fibre in carrot can additionally support the digestive tract by contributing to regular bowel activity.
Carrot also has plenty to offer in terms of taste: its natural sweetness makes recipes more appealing to many dogs, with no artificial flavours or added sugar at all. This makes the carrot a good example of how a simple vegetable can take on several roles in the bowl at once.
Carrots can also be chopped very finely, so they blend unobtrusively into the texture of a recipe. For your dog, this means they benefit from the nutrients it contains without anything fundamentally changing in the familiar taste of their food.
