Fish for Dogs
Fish is a natural alternative to classic land animal meat for many dogs, and provides nutrients in a form hardly any other raw material offers. Precisely because it often appears as a pure marketing word on packaging, it's worth taking a close look at what's really behind the term "fish". We explain what makes fish as an ingredient in dog food and why it can be interesting for your dog.
What is fish as a raw material?
At NANDOO, mainly salmon and various sea fish varieties are used. Usually the whole fillet or high-quality fish flesh is processed, depending on the recipe fresh, dried, or as fish oil. Fish therefore counts among the raw materials much discussed, yet whose exact origin and processing are rarely explained openly.
The individual fish varieties differ noticeably from one another. Salmon counts among the fattier fish and therefore delivers particularly high amounts of omega-3, while white-fleshed varieties such as cod tend to be low in fat and easily digestible. Some recipes also rely on fish skin, which, dried, serves as a natural chew while also containing valuable fatty acids.
Why fish for dogs?
Fish, particularly fatty varieties such as salmon, is one of the best natural sources of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fatty acids occur in fish in a form your dog's body can use particularly well, and are often associated with supporting skin and coat.
Fish is also easily digestible and provides high-quality protein. For dogs that react sensitively to land animal meat such as beef or chicken, fish can be a sensible alternative protein source, without having to forgo a balanced diet at all. Even for dogs without particular intolerances, fish is a welcome change from the usual menu.
